Closing the gaps between the three tower deck fans and the two viaducts to create a cable-stayed bridge was a hugely complicated, technical, but also spectacular job.

The three tower deck fans were all constructed as free-standing, balanced structures which meant that fine adjustments to alignments and individual cable tension were required when they joined together. A bit like tuning giant pianos!

In the video below, John Redpath explains how it was done and why sometimes it looked as if the deck ends would never meet!
